June 9, 2025 – This report released by the World Bank analyzes projected urban infrastructure needs by 2050 and highlights how stronger building codes can reduce future climate risks. It reviews code content and implementation in selected countries, focusing on structural resilience, green buildings, and accessibility. The report supports policymakers, technical experts, and development partners involved in building regulation.

On a related note, IBWG members were consulted the development of the Global Building Resilience Guidelines in 2020-21 that are cited in the report. The National Research Council led Canada's participation in the Global Resiliency Dialogue, made up of building code development and research organizations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA. The guidelines provided principles and strategies for the incorporation of future climate risks into building codes and standards.

Key reference of Canadian efforts in the report: "For example, Canada is in the process of updating its National Building Code to account for future climate change effects on wind patterns, precipitation, severe weather events, and temperature changes (Government of Canada, 2024)" p.4
